The Little Stranger
This film has got great ingredients for a ghost story. There is an old family secret, a manor that has seen better days, whispering servants, a man of reason who refuses to believe in anything that is not of this world, an evil spirit lurking in the window, and, of course, the upper-class mouth of British actress Ruth Wilson. This mouth was made famous by the TV show Luther. It cast a spell on the show’s star, Idris Elba. In The Little Stranger, Wilson plays Caroline, the sister of a man whose face was burned horribly during the war. When words like “there’s something in this house that hates us” come out of Wilson’s mouth, they sound very posh indeed.
