This film has got great ingredients for a ghost story. There is an old family secret, a manor that has seen better days, whispering servants, a man of reason who refuses to believe in anything that is not of this world, an evil spirit lurking in the window, and, of course, the upper-class mouth of British actress Ruth Wilson. This mouth was made famous by the TV show Luther. It cast a spell on the show’s star, Idris Elba. In The Little Stranger, Wilson plays Caroline, the sister of a man whose face was burned horribly during the war. When words like “there’s something in this house that hates us” come out of Wilson’s mouth, they sound very posh indeed. by Charles Mudede
